We visit the perfect holiday destination in Cornwall on the Isles of Scilly and talk to 28 Miles who produce unique toiletries in a unique environment.

We visit the perfect holiday destination in Cornwall on the Isles of Scilly and talk to 28 Miles who produce unique toiletries in a unique environment.

At UrlaubCornwall we want to show you the real lives of the Cornish, meeting people who live and work in this stunning setting. We hope to give you information and ideas for your holiday in Cornwall.

We have just visited the tiny island of St Agnes, one of a small group of islands known as the Isles of Scilly, located 28 miles from Lands End out in the Atlantic. Here we met Mike and Christine Hicks who have a small farm where they produce a range of fantastic soaps and toiletries in a spectacularly beautiful location. They also produce much of their own food taking advantage of the unique Mediterranean climate of these islands.

Urlaub Cornwall: What do you think is unique about the products you make?

28 Miles: Our climate and salty unpolluted air encourages healthy plants to produce superb essential oils which we extract using steam distillation. The therapeutic quality of essential oils has been well documented over the years so we hope people enjoy the benefit from our lovely soaps with aromatherapy built in.

UrlaubCornwall:  Can you describe how you work to produce your range of products?

28 Miles: We produce all our products by hand, from planting the seeds or cuttings, through harvesting, distillation and soap making process. We use traditional techniques without the use of any chemicals.

UrlaubCornwall: What sort of herbs and plants thrive in this environment?

28Miles: The seashore provides fantastic plants like Samphire which we use in one of our most popular soaps. It’s really evocative of the way that the winds whip up the tangy scents of the seashore herbs and wild plants. Inland our Mediterranean climate allows us to grow wonderful scented plants like Rose Geranium, Lavender, Chamomile and Rosemary. We use these in our soaps, hand wash and shower gels.

UrlaubCornwall: You must be proud to live and work on the Isles of Scilly?

28Miles: It’s not always easy on such a small island in an isolated position, but our soaps, handwash, shower gel and moisturiser are all handmade with the finest ingredients. They have with no parabens and represent our love of the islands, which stand out like jewels in a stunning blue sea. It’s a lifestyle and landscape that brings tourists back year after year and we are privileged to enjoy all year round.

Urlaub Cornwall: Mike and Christine many thanks for sharing your work and also an insight in to living on the remarkable Isles of Scilly.

A few little tips for overseas visitors from UrlaubCornwall to make you holiday in Cornwall more enjoyable!

Urlaub in Cornwall

Your holiday in Cornwall will be full of happy memories and we’d like to give you a few tips to help you make it as enjoyable and stress free as possible.

When arriving at Heathrow or one of London’s other airports don’t underestimate the time it takes to drive to Cornwall. If you arrive in the afternoon it’s advisable to break your journey on the first night en route to Cornwall. Traffic on the M25 around London can be very congested so allow plenty of time.

Why not fly to one of Great Britain’s regional airports Exeter, Newquay, Bristol or Southampton…..less busy and often more convenient.

Friday evenings between 7pm-9pm and Saturdays, the main changeover day for holiday rentals, are the most popular times for people to arrive in Cornwall so to start your tour off on the right note try and avoid these times. The rush from London to holiday homes in the South West produces traffic jams at places like Stonehenge on the A303 and as you come in to Cornwall there are several stretches of roads that reduce to one lane and this leads to very long traffic tailbacks.

Cornwall gets more sunshine than any other part of Great Britain, but even in the summer be prepared for all kinds of weather! The air in Cornwall is free from the pollution and the sun can be strong so don’t forget to pack you sunscreen.

Don’t forget to pack and adapter for you electrical appliances. The electricity in England is 240V AC, with 3 square pins.

Most businesses will accept Mastercard and Visa, but some small hotels and B&Bs may charge a surcharge for credit cards or require payment in cash. Banks are open 9.30 am – 4.30pm Mon- Friday and some in larger towns like Truro open on Saturday mornings. Cash machines (ATMs) are widely available.

Just a few to bear in mind when planning your holiday or tour of Cornwall.
