On the island of St Martins, in the Isles of Scilly, with its pure white sand beaches and turquoise sea is not the first place you’d think of to find a couple living and working to produce some very special jewellery. UrlaubCornwall: What brought you to the Isles of Scilly?

Fay Page: Rob worked for a number of years skippering one of the ferries that take holiday makers between the five inhabited islands that make up the Isles of Scilly. It was in 2001when I decided that London city life wasn’t for me and moved down…it was a life changing moment.

UrlaubCornwall: Where do you produce your jewellery?

Fay Page: We moved to our two bed roomed, converted animal shelter, in 2005 and created our workshop in the garden in 2007. It’s a beautiful place built out of local granite nestling in a sheltered spot near the island quay.

 UrlaubCornwall: Where does your inspiration for your work come from?

Fay Page: Our silver jewellery reflects the sea as well the flora and fauna of the island. We produce pendants with clusters of shimmering fish, charm bracelets with tiny silver cowrie and whelk shells.

UrlaubCornwall: Living on a small island 28 miles out in to the Atlantic must be challenging how do you cope with the isolation?

Fay Page: Scilly is remote and getting things people on the mainland take for granted is often difficult, but we’ve learnt to use what we have rather than buying new. Cornwall’s temperate climate means that we can be almost self sufficient in vegetables all year round. When we go to the mainland we realise that our lives are more straightforward and less stressed!

UrlaubCornwall: What are you plans for your business?

Fay Page: We can’t really expand too much due to manpower and studio space available on St Martins, but we do take commissions and can ship pieces abroad. We find many German visitors to this part of Cornwall are keen to take home a memory of their stay.

A spring holiday or tour in Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without a visit to see some of its beautiful Camellias.

Originally native to China and Japan Camellias thrive in the mild climate of Cornwall. Specimens arrived in the 18^th Century by ships returning from the Far East, bought by wealthy landowners who had made their fortunes in the mining and shipping industry.

We’ll show you the gardens you have to visit to learn the history of this now very typical Cornish flower. Let’s start our tour in the very East of Cornwall at Mount Edgcumbe Gardens the home of the National Camellia Collection. One of only 3 Grade 1 listed gardens in the county and the only one open to the public all year round. As a souvenir of your holiday in Cornwall selected plants are for sale.

As we move west we come to Anthony Woodland Garden which has the National Collection of Camellia Japonica set in 100 acres (40 hectares) of woodland adjoining the picturesque Lyner Estuary.
Then Caerhays Castle which is situated on Cornwall’s south coast and was the original home of the x Williamsii camellias collected in China in the early 1900s. The ‘Caerhays’ Camellia has beautiful crimson- pink flowers that become purple with age.

A short trip on the King Harry Car Ferry across the river Fal brings you to Trelissick owned by the National Trust, a 20 acres garden planted 200 years ago perched above the river. Close by is the oldest garden in Cornwall is Enys famous for its bluebells and an amazing display of Camellias; a tranquil garden for your holiday enjoyment.

Driving past Falmouth you’ll arrive at Trebah and Glendurgan; both in valleys that stretch down to the Helford Estuary. Outstanding all year round, ever changing with the seasons and definitely a garden to visit for Camellias.

Onwards past the Lizard and on to Penzance you’ll find Tregwaiton a fascinating woodland garden with splendid views over Mounts Bay.

Heading back to Truro, Cornwall’s county town is Trewithen renowned for its Camellias including the Trewithen hybrid Camellia ‘Glenn’s Orbit’, worth searching out.
After seeing the many and varied Camellias in Cornwall why not sample a cup of tea from the Camellia sirienas (the tea plant) grown on the Tregthnan Estate near Truro…..a cup of Cornish grown tea with a  scone, jam and clotted cream. Perfect!

Situated close to the seafront in the heart of Falmouth, one of Cornwall’s most historic towns is Gyllyngdune Gardens. Now restored to its former glory as part of a £2.4m project with the aim of recreating the way it looked to visitors in Victorian and Edwardian times.

Set out by the Rev Coope and his family in 1838 the gardens were created in a quarry from which stone had been taken to build the Coope’s family estate. It was a Victorian fashion of the day to add the quirky features that the gardens are now known for; the Monolitic arch that site incongruously perched on a rise, the quarry tunnel used to enter the garden from the sea front, the shell seats and shell encrusted grotto. It’s believed that the daughters of Rev Coope decorated the shell features themselves.

The ownership of the land and gardens changed hands until the town council in Falmouth bought it in 1903 to preserve the now popular attraction. In 1911 what is know known as the Princess Pavilion was built and opened by Princess Alexandra of Teck.

With a concert hall, a covered veranda and a bandstand in the gardens it became the ideal for promenading and enjoying outdoor entertainment. Indeed, today throughout the summer events are regularly held and make a visit to the Gyllyngdune Gardens to enjoy art, music, learn or just to relax.

The process of restoration is all but complete and the restocking of the flower beds with plants and shrubs means that the 2012 will see a completely rejuvenated attraction and something that you must see on a visit to this part of Cornwall.

Beckham, Ballack and some of the world’s most famous footballers decided to come on holiday to Cornwall to experience the world’s smallest football league on the Isles of Scilly.

The Cornish islands came to a standstill as these international stars came to help train the island’s handful of players.

The Isles of Scilly only have enough players for 2 teams, but that doesn’t stop them from playing a full season against each other.

The Garrison Gunners and The Woolpack Wanderers play every week on the islands’ only football pitch.

During their visit, Michael Ballack and Patrick Vieira took the younger players onto the Scillies’ beaches to teach them some of their skills.

Their trip was filmed by Adidas as part of their ‘Dream Big’ series.  Adidas were travelling around the world to give their big names the chance to help the smallest football communities.

What is the most popular destination for Germans travelling to the UK? You may be surprised to know that Cornwall is their holiday of choice or as the Germans say Urlaub in Cornwall.

Some of the reasons are obvious Germany as doesn’t have a lot of coastline relative to its size and population. Cornwall has some of Britain’s most beautiful beaches and coves and a history and mythology that fascinates.
