St Mary’s ist die größte der Scilly-Inseln und Hugh Town ist die wichtigste (und einzige) Stadt der Insel. Oberhalb von Hugh Town findet man das Star Castle Hotel. Dieses Gebäude in der Form eines achtzackigen Sterns wurde in der Herrschaftszeit der Königin Elizabeth I. als Verteidigungsbaute errichtet. 1933 wurde es dann zu einem Hotel umfunktioniert und bietet Gästen seitdem die fantastische Gelegenheit, in einem Schloss zu wohnen, dessen Geschichte bis zum Jahr 1593 zurückreicht. Das Hotel wurde in elegantem Stil restauriert und liebevoll für den modernen Urlauber eingerichtet. Die einst strategische Lage des Star Castle zum Schutz der Scilly-Inseln hat zur Folge, dass man auch heute noch eine herrliche, weitreichende Aussicht über die umliegende Landschaft genießt.

Ein abendlicher Spaziergang um die Festung ist der perfekte Auftakt zu einem Abendessen im Star Castle Hotel.
Auf der Insel St Mary’s gibt es viel zu sehen und zu entdecken. Auf dem Küstenweg kann man die gesamte Insel in einem Tag umlaufen, ein erquickendes Erlebnis, bei dem man an der frischen Luft unterwegs ist, sich an der wunderschönen Aussicht erlaben und über die Geschichte der Insel erfahren kann. Für eine kürzere Wanderung empfehlen wir, mit dem Bus in den Norden der Insel zu fahren und dann über Porth Hellick und Old Town zurück nach Hugh Town zu laufen.
Besuchen Sie auf Ihrer Wanderung Halangy Down, eine prähistorische Siedlung aus der Bronze- und Eisenzeit, und laufen Sie dann weiter zur Pelistry Bay, wo Sie sich im glasklaren Meerwasser erfrischen können.
In Old Town gibt es einen weiteren beliebten Strand und ein nettes Café. Zusätzlich zu den Küstenwegen gibt es auch Naturpfade, die durch das Innere der Insel führen.
Wieder in Hugh Town angekommen, können Sie im Isles of Scilly Museum die maritime, soziale und naturkundliche Geschichte der Scilly-Inseln näher kennenlernen.
Porthcressa Beach, St Mary’s
Auch heute ist die Seefahrtstradition noch immer ein fester Bestandteil von Cornwall und den Scilly-Inseln. Im Sommer finden jede Woche sogenannte Gig Races statt. Gigs sind hölzerne Ruderboote, die ursprünglich verwendet wurden, um Schiffe durch die heimtückischen Felsen vor der Küste zu lotsen, heute werden sie allerdings nur noch für Bootsrennen genutzt. Viele der originalen Boote – manche sind über 100 Jahre alt – kommen noch heute in diesen beliebten Wettfahrten zum Einsatz.
Der Sport ist so beliebt, dass hier jedes Jahr die internationalen Gig Racing Championships stattfinden, einer der besten Sportveranstaltungen in Cornwall. Über 50 Boote und Hunderte von Ruderern treffen sich auf den Scilly-Inseln, um sich in den Rennen aneinander zu messen und einen Sieger zu krönen. Dieses Jahr findet der Wettbewerb vom 4. bis 7. Mai statt. Es ist eine der besten Sportattraktionen in Cornwall und ein einmaliges Erlebnis, egal ob Sie im Besucherboot neben den Ruderern herfahren oder an der Ziellinie im Hafen mit einem Bier in der Hand die Wettbewerber anfeuern.

Mount Haven is only a few minutes from the boat, plane and helicopter, giving you a chance to relax in a wonderful setting before heading onto the Scilly Isles.
Mount Haven has one of the most iconic views of any hotel in Britain. From the windows and balconies, you can see clear views of St. Michaels Mount. The island and castle is a few hundred metres off the south coast of England, and stands as one of Southern England’s most enduring features.
As well as the view, Mount Haven has a lot more to offer. Each room is individually decorated with a unique and contemporary mixture of Eastern culture and Western comfort in this converted old coach house. The spacious lounge and terrace are ideal for enjoying the relaxed ambience of Mount Haven, while perhaps trying some local Newlyn crab for lunch. What can you expect on your holiday on the Isles of Scilly? As visitors to the islands for the last 20 years we never tire of the stunning scenery and the pace of life that harks back to a Cornwall of many years ago.
Travelling around the islands is exclusively undertaken by a fleet of small boats that ferry visitors between the main inhabited islands for day trips, as well as visits to a few of the beautiful uninhabited ones or trips to see the seals, dolphin and puffins.
Each island has at least one boat that performs several roles including daily trips for tourists, bringing supplies and taking produce to market. St Martin’s vessel is known as Voyager, owned and run by the Perkins family for many years, starts the day with from the quayside picking up those that want to visit St Mary’s the largest island. Whether you’re going to the shops of Hugh Town, the only town on the island, or a walking tour to see the historic sites or maybe just a day on one of the many amazing beaches, there is a wealth of attractions and activities.
Take the Spirit of St Agnes, the boat that serves the most south westerly island St Agnes to see the remote community that lives and works in this stunning place. Visit a the small Troy Town farm that produces its own ice cream or enjoy a pint of Cornish beer in the Turk’s Head, famous for its Cornish Pasties. A walk around the islands provides views of the world famous Bishops Rock lighthouse and unusual rock formations on the shore.
Tresco and Bryher are the final two islands to the West, again reached by boats like the Firethorn. Tresco is home to the world renowned Abbey Gardens featuring plants that won’t grow in any other part of Great Britain. Bryher is famous for its beaches and on its westerly coast the notorious Hell Bay where the worst Atlantic’s storms hurl huge waves that have wrecked many ships…..a site to behold.
Day trips to the Eastern Isles are popular with all the family, seeing the grey seals, puffins or maybe even dolphins that are common in these warm waters.

St Mary’s is the largest island in the group which makes up the Isles of Scilly. Hugh Town is the main town on the island.
Above Hugh Town, is the Star Castle Hotel, it was originally built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I for the defence of the Isles of Scilly. Star Castle was built in the shape of an eight pointed star and was converted into a hotel in 1933. A walk around the Garrison is ideal for an evening stroll before or after dinner at The Star Castle Hotel.
There is plenty to do on St Mary’s, it is possible to walk around the island in one day, taking in the views and learning about the history of the island as you go. If you don’t want to walk the whole of the coast path there is a bus which will take you to the north of the island and you can then walk back to Hugh Town via Porth Hellick and Old Town.
Visit Halangy Down, the prehistoric settlement dating from the Bronze and Iron Age, continue your walk passing Pelistry Bay the best place to stop for a swim in the clear sea.
At Old Town is another popular beach and cafe, as well as coastal paths there are nature trails across the island.
The Isles of Scilly Museum is the best place to learn about the maritime, social and natural history of the islands.
A unique part of the Cornish and Isles of Scilly maritime history can be seen in the Gig races which take place every week throughout the summer, the Gigs were originally used to guide ships past the treacherous rocks, but now they are just used in sport. Many of the original Gigs are still used, some over 100 years old.
One of Cornwall top sporting attraction and event is held every year in the spring is the International Gig Racing Championships which take place in the islands and this year between 4th and 7th May over 50 boats and hundreds of rowers come to race .This is one of the top sporting attractions in Cornwall and unlike anything else you’ll see.

The Ruin Beach Cafe at Old Grimsby features a wood burning oven and fantastic sea views. The Ruin is open all day serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon cakes and dinner.
The Abbey Garden cafe is open every day between 10am and 4pm serving light snacks and cakes. You are welcome to visit the cafe whether or not you are visiting the Abbey Garden.
The Flying Boat Club is a members only restaurant at New Grimsby. All guests renting our Tresco cottages receive membership of the Flying Boat Club.
